How to Report a Lost Credit Card Before it's too Late

Losing a credit card can be a very daunting experience, but one thing is for sure, time is of essence when you need to report a lost credit card.

Once you have made your call you should also send in a letter that includes your credit card account number, when you first noticed your card was missing and the date you called to report your credit card lost.

Steps to Report a Lost Credit Card

  • Immediately place a call to your credit card company notifying them of your lost credit card
    • Most credit card companies have a 24 hour hot-line you can call
  • After placing a call to your credit card company, you will want to also follow up with a letter. Your letter should include:
    • Name
    • Address
    • Account number
    • Date you noticed your card missing
    • Date you called the credit card company to report your credit card lost

Your credit card company will provide you with further information on any additional steps you need to take and when you will receive a new card. Each credit card company has its own procedure for working through the lost credit card process.

Your Liability for a Lost Credit Card

You will be relieved to know that your liability for new charges when you have lost your credit card are fixed at $50.00.

  • The FTC states that 'Your maximum liability under federal law for unauthorized use of your credit card is $50.00'.
  • If you are able to report your lost credit card before it is used, then the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) states that the credit card issuer can't hold you responsible for any unauthorized charges made with your card.
  • If your card is used by a thief before you get a chance to report it missing, $50 is the most you will owe for any unauthorized charges made with your card.
  • If you don't actually lose the credit card itself, but someone gets your credit card number, then you have no liability for any unauthorized use on the card.
